Can anyone tell me what factors affect the expression of fragrance? Normally
at this time of year I'm overpowered by the smell of sweet woodruff, but in
this chilly spring it has virtually no scent. On the other hand, suddenly I
can't stop smelling my Spanish bluebells, which never had an odor before (or
at least an odor I noticed). My phlox stolonifera 'Blue Ridge' have a
perceptible scent for the first time as well. And I believe that my pansies
(new ones every year, of course) have a stronger fragrance than ever. I've
never read that old-fashioned bleeding heart has a smell yet every year it
creates a note that infuses the outdoors. Alternatively I keep sniffing the
Solomon's seals, but I've never found a scent.
