Perhaps the best thing about gardening is that it allows each individual to
create an environment that appeals to them. Clyde, if you hate daylilies
then don't plant them but don't criticize the lady down the street who has
lots of them. Perhaps her mother planted lots of daylilies, and the sight of
them bring back memories for her. We gardeners plant certain things for many
reasons, and the enjoyment we get from our gardens is a wonderful thing in
this busy, rush-rush world we live in. Our homes should be our sanctuary,
our one place on earth where we can live in peace and express ourselves.
Just as no two people are alike, no two gardens are alike as well. Some
people find simple, noncluttered yards provide them with a peaceful feeling.
Others can obtain that same feeling looking out over their expanse of riotous
flowers. I say, do what you want in your garden, it's your labor and time
and it is your place on earth. One of my earliest memories is of my mother
going to the nursery every spring to buy petunias, which she planted in
flower boxes on the front porch. She died four years ago, but I still plant
some petunias every spring and the scent of their blooms brings her back to
me instantly. They don't last long here in Houston, but while they are
living, a little piece of her is with me.
