Sheila,

Last fall I dug up and moved five mature bleeding
hearts. They were very brittle and broke a lot in the
process. But I wasn't worried, because I'd chopped off
pieces before to get more plants. My transplants are
doing beautifully this spring...now blooming. In
addition, I've moved and given away dozens more that
came up from the pieces of roots left where the mature
plants used to be. These are not delicate plants!
(Mine also seem to seed themselves profusely.)

I'd be a bit worried, however, about the condition of
your plant. Like yours, I have one in part sun, and
its gotten huge and beautiful. Maybe you should dig it
up just to see what's going on with the roots. If
they're rotting for some reason, you won't want to
plant another in the same spot. Or it may be better to
divide one or both of the healthy plants?

Good luck!

Yvonne
