an introduction

Hi to the list,
I just received my welcome letter and was asked to introduce myself.
I live near San Antonio,TX. I am blssed to be living in a beautiful
area of the Texas Hill country....but we do have our gardening problems.
This land is very short on soil and rock bountiful! Most people around
here have raised beds for everything since you have to import soil.

I try to grow just about anything, but am trying to be more xeriscape
conscientious. I also want to plant more native plants. My yard is
facing west and east...so part is always in the shade, under large trees
and the other is in the hot, blazing summer sun.

Being a nut for garden catalogs, I came across Helleborus and fell in
love with its wonderful flowers. I have planted two this spring and can
hardly wait to see them bloom. Of course, I have the traditional ferns
and hostas, but am looking for something different and long lasting if
possible.

Being a member of my county's Master Gardener program, I also like to
pass along any great gardening tips. Through the internet I have learned
so much that I share some of what I find with the other Master Gardeners
in my area through our newsletter, by writing a column about gardening
web sites.

Hoping to learn and share with all of you,
Marlene Skaggs
