Last year, Clyde suggested using aluminum sulfate as a side-dressing on
established clumps (or mixed into the planting hole for new hostas), which
was supposed to render the plants slug-resistant. Guess what - it works!
I have plenty of slugs, but not on my hostas.

You might try Netted Chain Fern. It takes alot of watering its first year,
but thrives in full sun and tolerates drought the second year. That
information is valid for my area - I am not sure how they would react in
the South or Southwest. This fern is not as lacy as Ostrich or Cinnamon
ferns. There is also the easily-grown Christmas fern, but it looks a
little more coarse.
