Re: [SG] Betula Nigra

I planted a dwarf river birch (betula negra "Little King") very early
this spring, and thus far it has done very well. It's bushy, and the
leaves have good color and quantity. It's nice and bushy. I was told
by the nursery that I should treat the dwarf like any other normal
sized river birch. In the last week or so, though, I've noticed a
gradually increasing number of yellow leaves appearing toward the
inside of the tree. The tree is so bushy I didn't notice them at
first, but now those leaves are starting to drop.

I've never planted a tree before, so when it started doing well I was
thrilled. Now, however, I'm scared. I love this little tree. It's 3
years old, and about 4 feet tall, and about 3 feet in diameter. My
soil is primarily clay. I live in the midwest, z6, and I have 2 oak
trees and about 6 white pines in the yard. My neighbor has a maple.
I planted the tree in a spot that gets sun and a portion of dappled
sun / shade throughout the day, and where it doesn't dry out badly. I
guess I was wondering if the foliage is so thick that the inside
leaves are not getting enough sun, or too much / too little water.
I'm at a loss. Help ??
