In my experience, azaleas and rhodies are more tolerant of alkaline soil
than a lot of other plants, but it may depend on the cultivars you are
growing. I am definitely no expert, and hope someone with more knowledge
of azalea and rhodies AND river birches (preferably someone in the
Midwest) will jump in here with regard to the advisability of using
fertilizers intended for azaleas on a river birch. I am sure they also
help to acidify the soil but whether they are a good thing for new plants
I don't know. Surely a light dose wouldn't hurt. But I do think you want
to lower your pH.
