The soil's pretty moist, of course. I've never tested it, but
assumed, since there are so many evergreens, azaleas and rhodies
around, that it was probably somewhat acidic. I will run right out
and get some. Stupid question warning: Would fertilizer intended for
azaleas be appropriate here? Also, is it ok to fertilize so soon
after planting this little guy? Thanks for the advice.

Denise, according to Michael Dirr's book River Birch likes moist
acidic
soil. I am guessing that as far west as St. Louis your soil is pretty
alkaline. Try watering it with Miracid a few times a year and see if
that
helps. And/or work some soil sulphur into the ground around the tree.
