Re: A Second Raised Bed
Hi Bobbi B.
I have what is known as a holding area. It is the same size as the end of my
garage where I build a cold frame facing east. Nothing I ever purchase ends up
directly in the garden. I always pot up and place in the holding area to watch the
plants for a while. Sometimes the plant may find a home in the garden within a few
months, sometime it will be out there for several years until it works into size,
or bloom or simply the "right" spot.
I am a collector at heart. Have my little lists of genus I am fascinated by
and then keep my eyes open for all the species / cultivars / forms I can find. I
then find a place for them in the garden.
My plants come from retail catalogs just like you order. I also make trades of
seeds and plants. Of course, wholesale as well. I try to grow things in my garden
for a while to see how they perform before they end up in the nursery, but yes I
pull things from the nursery display area on occasion to use in the garden.
On "left-overs" I pick two organizations each year to donate to that are
local. I also trade for things that I do not grow, but have a need for such as
shrubs and trees for my backyard habitat project.
The "old fulva" you mention below... Iris fulva?
