One thing that has worked for me with somewhat tender plants in general is
to put those little Christmas lights in them and leave them on for cold
nights. The lights give just enough heat to protect my citrus trees in
pots or a tibouchina here in Northern Calif. If you have a very big
differential, you might also want to cover the lighted plant with row cover
or a blanket on extremely cold nights.
