Re: understory tree

Well, Nancy, I have 'Bloodgood' growing in way too much shade; hardly
gets any sun at all. It gets very rangy, but mine's been there for
some 15 years or so...still a marvelous red in fall.

Not a tree, because most real trees are either going to get much
taller than you want or will not tolerate deep shade, except some as
seedlings...but in addition to the shrubs that Bobbi mentioned, the
native Lindera benzoin grows in my woods in deep shade and can reach
about 10-15 feet in time..it is not hugely fast growing. The
not-native and considered-by-some-invasive Lonicera maackii will get
about that tall. They show up here and there in my woods. Some I
leave and some I don't. I have one that I'm very fond of; nice
vase-shaped form with flowers in spring and red berries in fall.
They also grow in pretty deep shade.

Pieris japonica will reach 9 - 12 feet in time. It is very slow
growing. Will grow in quite deep shade, but you may not see as many
flowers; lovely shrub all year 'round.

I have native Cornus florida in pretty deep shade, tho' it is
dappled; not shade from a building or evergreens. They will get
taller than 15', however.

I really think you need to think "shrub" instead of tree here - with
that height desired...
