I'll have to disagree with everyone else (so far). I have used a
bulb auger for bulbs and other mass plantings of young plants.
True, they will not go through roots and rock, but then the soil
is probably not prepared properly anyway. If the garden bed
has been worked, or the soil is naturally free of large roots and
rock, the auger works great. It quickly loosens the soil,
prepares the planting hole to the appropriate depth, and pulls
the fill soil up in a neat mound around the hole.
My wife picked one up at a local garden center (Lowes) and I
have seen them several places. Should not be necessary to
order by mail.
