Re trees and shrubs. Check out Dirr's book, "Hardy Trees and Shrubs", and
also Harrison Flint's book whose title is something like Landscape Plants
for the North Central United States. Both are excellent references for
woody material. There are also some good web sites at Purdue, Ohio State,
and Michigan State that identify plants for specific situations or at which
you can look up specific plants. Let me know if you would like me to list
them for you.
