Claire and all--
Sambucus (Elderberry) is very shade tolerant. I have one on the east side
of the house where it gets no afternoon sun. A second--a volunteer--is
growing nicely UNDER OUR BIG SILVER MAPLE on the north side of the house!
It never encounters any sun. A friend of mine says that all elderberries,
including the ornamental cultivars, are straggly and scraggly and not
worth planting, but I rather like the look of them.
I have the ForestFarm catalog and it seems to be pretty well supplied with
native shrubs. What other catalogs are good?
Your suggestion that we take up shrubs now is a timely one, for me. I must
say that the shrubs I've collected so far have been a tremendous pleasure.
They take time to grow, but are well worth it.
Fothergillas take some shade. There's another shrub we could discuss.
I wouldn't mind collecting a few more of those.
