Avoid the kind that runs on electricity and is like an inverted weed-eater.
These lack power to handle even damp leaves and quickly clog and stall.
The motors burn out quickly under even modest use.
Actually I find that it is not neccessary to shred leaves to get good leaf
mold, though shredding works faster. With unshredded leaves and a handful
of lawn fertilizer sprinkled on each 1-foot thick layer, I get usable stuff
in about a year. Since I make a pile each year, that means I have plenty
whenever I want it. The key is to be sure the leaves are damp before
piling them up; once piled it is hard for water to penetrate the heap. Dry
leaves take much, much longer to break down.
