Royce, I don't know where you are in zone 5, but I have had best luck with
all ferns when planting in fall. Since Japanese painted ferns vary so
much, it's better to select these plants yourself, which rules out mail
order. If your local nurseries don't carry painted ferns in fall, then
surely they will have them in spring. Call them and ask! And if they don't
have them then, you can always opt for Wayside or White Flower Farm.
