    Fall is, indeed, the best time to plant ferns. Spread those roots out into the
planting hole that has lots of compost or humus added, mulch and water well and
then forget them until spring. Gives them all winter to settle in, repair the
damage to feeder roots caused when transplanting... most never know they have been
moved. just wake up in their new home feeling great and performing as though they
had always been there.
    Same with any early blooming perennial... bet those beauties into the ground
this fall, early winter, for best performance.
    Up to my unmentionable in fall planting here and will be until around the
middle of November... depending upon weather.
