Hello Peggy,
    I would use a bit of caution on your new bed you are creating. If that "pit"
holds water now it will do the same when filled with compost.... only hold it
longer with all the material with more surface area. You may want to think about
getting it above ground level to at least get the crowns up out of the extra
moisture, or choose plants that do not mind wet toes.
