Re: Azaleas, Rhododendrons

Must be a lot of articles on the Web that address their viablity in the
Midwest and includes suggested species/cultivars.

For another example, I quickly opened Forest Farm's catalog (they're in
Oregon, where else), and they mention (special boxed section, pg 244)
"Lights Series HARDY DEC. AZALEA....These Very Hardy and Very Pretty azaleas
were developed by the Univ. of Minnesota. Rounded 2-4' shrubs, they will
provide bright late spring flowers and bugundy fall color in the
garde...even the very cold, very northern garden!" After which are listed 8
cultivars, all $12.

Incidentally, I recently got a catalog from Arbor Village in MO, very good
for unusual trees, and was sad to find, when I looked under Rhododendron,
that they say they are "not the happiest of campers in the Midwest" and
carry ONE variety that supposedly does adequately. I hope I'm not kidding
myself here.

But I heard from Tammy in MO who successfully grows PJM hybrids, at least.
And she found them at WalMart no less!
