Re: Vines for the shade....

Hello Bobbi,
As you know there is no such thing as a "deer proof" plant. They will
eat, or at the least taste, almost any plant if they are hungry enough and
nothing else is available to them. Having said that some plants seem to get
left alone most of the time. I have not had the deer mess with my vines to
date. I have climbing hydrangea on the walnut tree in the center of my
garden. Have had for many years with no deer browsing. Wood vamp is out
there in containers next to the woods where deer come up to the nursery on
occasion to cause us grief.... have not bothered the Wood Vamp. Even if they
do browse some of the foliage the vine will recover, especially if it is on
up above the deer's reach. It will be a tall vine.....
We will have 2 gallon size next spring for pick up here.

Gene, I'm interested to learn more about Decumaria barbara or Wood Vamp.
Do the
deer eat this one? Could I grow it on an arbor or is it too vigorous?

I have not had much success with native vines for shade. Other than
Moonvine,
which I don't think anyone would want to plant on purpose!

Hello James,
I have not tried these vines on a chain link fence, but they are
vines
that bloom nicely and do well in shade. First that comes to mind is the
Climbing Hydrangea. There is the species and several cultivars to choose
from. Thus far I have the species going up a walnut tree in my garden.
Also
have Schizophragma Moonlight which is a very nice variegated version and
hope to add Roseum next spring. Decumaria barbara or Wood Vamp is another
vigorous vine for shade that is native to this region. Nice foliage and
bloom, often referred to as the "Native climbing hydrangea".
