I think the idea of wintering over impatienses is an admirable one; but, for
me would be a lot of work. If you let the seeds fall to the ground and have
lots of those red ones, the probability is that you will have some germinate
next spring and some of these will be red. (Most will be white or magenta.)
I make great use of impatienses in my garden. I have found that they are the
least expensive for what you get of any other "companion" plant. One flat of
those that indicate they grow from 8 to 12 " tall can be spaced on 3-foot
centers, and make quite a show.
I have overwintered them as suggested by someone else. I pot them up and keep
them near a sunny window . They're tough.
