You did nothing wrong!! It's good that you left the leaves on there even if they turned brown. They probably just got in contact with the plastic bag or maybe it was too moist inside. Make sure you shake off the excess rooting hormone if you use the powder. Everything seems perfectly fine. Make sure they don't get too much water beacuse they rot at times. Rooting in water is perfectly fine as well!!!! When bagging the pot. poke a small hole to get some air in there and place sticks to prop the plastic so it doesn't get in contact with the cutting. As long as the geranium stem is green healthy and alive : ) It should root fine. A little bottom heat would really help in inducing root production.
