Hi Pottsey, here are two off the top of my head...
Luzula nivea, snowy woodrush, (i just picked up a small one from the local
garden club sale...it's kinda fuzzy and bluish-green) preferred sites: open
mountains; forestes with moist, loamy humus. perhaps the most ornamental of
the woodrushes..8 - 12 " tall and wide, flowers are fluffy white umbels, 1/2
to 3/4 inch across (this info taken from the Encycl. of Ornamental Grasses)
Deschampsia caespitosa, tufted hairgrass: Origin = N. Hemisphere, 3-1/2 - 4',
Ori season of interest June - Oct, prefers moist and shady sites, large beige
flowers make a soft mound of "hair" above almost evergreen foliage. (this info
taken from U of MN ext. bulletin on their 6 yr study of the cold tolerance of
grasses)
ok, now that I got out the bulletin I quoted from above, here is the list of
grasses they recommend for shady locations:
Cares species most sedges
Deschampsia caepitosa tufted hairgrass
Hakonechloa macra hakonegrass
Hystrix patula bottlebrush
Juncus effusus common rush
Luzula species most woodrushes
I'd like to hear others experiences with these grasses and grass-like plants..
Thanks,
Cindy Johnson
