Lavender

Hmmm, Pottsey,

You have hit upon one of my past lives! Until a chronic sinus
infection resulted from allergies which it turned out came from
LIVING and LOVING making dried flower arrangements and potpourri's,
I would be very busy at this time of year indulging in fragrant
plants. ;-(

Lavender flowers is what is usually used in potpourri, but it sounds
like you just cut the foliage back? Am I wrong? I usually would
harvest the flower stems back in July here in Ma. They are harvested
when the flowers are 4/5 up the stem. WHEN to harvest is part of the
technique of retaining fragrance. Dead flowers, are dead fragrance....

So , I am confused by your question. I did use the leaves, which I
would just destem with thumb and third finger, then dry quickly on
paper towels, and I would tie stems of flowers, picked fresh and
before noontime on a sunny day; band with elastic and string on a
long string hanging from the ceiling for about two weeks during a non
humid time and in a dark place with a fan going all the time. Fast
drying and dark places, hold fragrance.

Both can be used with potpourri's but the flower is better.

If you have just flowers, just stick tons of them in a small clay pot
all bunched together, tie with a bow in the middle of the stems and
use that as the decoration in the hallway, or bathroom!

Bobbie, in Ma
