Stumps, nurse logs, and troughs

As a result of clearing several overmature alders and maples, I've now
got a plethora of hollow stumps, 6" to 24" hollow "rounds", and
U-shaped "throughs". I'm looking for plants that would do well planted
in these situations -- anything from woodland types (a deciduous
huckleberry has already spoken for one stump) to early succession
types. Any and all suggestions welcome!
