Clyde,
Hostas are very good at hiding bulb foliage! I also plant impatiens,
snapdragons
salvia and a variety of perennials around the bulbs.
Now as far as when to cut the foliage. I do as SOON as they are yellow or
they get
in my way! I have had some tulips for 10+ years now and they still bloom
every spring. I don't believe they have increased as much as they might have
if I would wait longer.
As far as suggestions on ones w/ variegated foliage. Here is a list of some
you may want to try.
Tulips -- Greigiis have maroon mottled and streaked leaves.
Triumph 'Cheerleader' red flower/variegated leaves
Triumph 'Carnaval de Rio' red/white flowers/variegated leaves
Double tulip 'Top Lips' white/rosey flower/variegated leaves
Iris Pseudacorus 'Variegata' yellow flowers/yellow and green variegated
leaves
Iris Pallida 'Variegata' purple/blue flowers/green and white variegated
leaves
Some interesting Narcissus you might want to try are... 'Rip Van Winkle'
blooms early spring - yellow double flowers - about 6in.
'Sun Disc' blooms late spring - yellow 'disc' shaped flowers - about 6in. and
'Golden Bells' blooms early spring - yellow bell/cup shaped flowers - about
8in.
Hope all of this helps.
