I joined this list back in 97 but was forced by circumstances to sign off
last March, so some of you make recognize me from this and other lists.
Basic info: We own 66 acres of ex-timberland consisting of high and (very)
dry mostly sunny hills dropping down to low almost swampy at times heavy
shade. 80 feet elevation difference. Lots of mixed hardwood (oak, hickory,
sweet gum, black gum and lots and lots of large native dogwoods) and pine.
We are gradually reclaiming and thinning out the scrub and replacing with
more horticulturally desirable plants. So you might say that we are
gardening in three stages: clean-up, reshaping and enrichment. Though we
have built a fair number of terraces on the slopes and introduced thousands
of bulbs where appropriate, few formal beds have been built as yet. Now
that we are finally living on the property, hopefully this will change in
the not too distant future. Future goals: about 40 acres of gardens and the
rest in natives.
