Hi; Harry Able: your reply to my letter reminded me that you wished to
know when my Phyllostachys nigra turned black. Three large culms grew this
year; the largest was over 15' by July, and two others were about 10'. The
smaller ones turned black over a three-week period from September into the
first week of October, and the largest is black on the lower 3', with the
color very slowly rising. The smaller culms are in high shade with about 4
hours of direct sun per day, and the larger gets about 6 hours. I do not
know why there is a difference in the rate of color progression.
The Sarracenia will grow in a 'marsh' with very light shade cast by the
bamboo, which is kept out of the marsh by a concrete barrier. You have to
picture this as a very small area, even though the bamboo is a large,
spreading plant (it is not spreading successfully into the neighbor's yard,
because their dogs are eating the shoots).
I would also like to try the exotic Nepenthes, but cannot find anyone who
will ship to the US. If I have them sent to my son in Germany, how can he
(legally) send them on to me? Any information is much appreciated.
