Bobbi,
I have the extension office test our soil every fall, it's no big
deal. For 6 bucks I get the whole shabang, in about two weeks time.
You'll get more for your dollar, and how to make the right adjustments
for the bed(s) using this service. I have a test done for each flower
bed, the asperagus bed and one for the vegetable garden, five in all.
Come to think of it, I should also do one for the lawn as well.
As for the blueberries, they need a very acidic soil, pH 4.5 - 5.5.
We add compost in the spring (as a mulch) as well as feritilze, in the
fall we make pH adjustments found by the soil test. Keep first year
plants from bearing, and you'll be rewarded the next year with an
abundant crop of berries.
