Herbicides

Since the topic came up... What have you found most effective for killing
the tough woodies?

We are reclaiming ex-timberland and have large numbers of stump regrowth,
briars, blackberries and vines. Round-up seems to work pretty good on grape
(if I can get enough coverage), but some vines, seedlings and stumps
(especially Sweet Gum) just shrug it off with no noticable effect.
