Some are hardy into zone 5 with appropriate siting and a little protection.
One of the hardiest is Crinum x-powellii, but I had C. 'Ellen Bosanquet'
and C. americanum both survive last winter outdoors in the ground. These
are among the very hardiest crinums.
I planted these about 15" deep (bottom of the hole/bottom of the bulbs)
near the south foundation of the greenhouse. They were also mulched
heavily last winter.
They have not reached bloom size yet, and I don't know whether they ever
will -- this is really pushing my luck and their zone tolerance. The
point being that some plants can really be grown outside their traditional
zone limits.
By the way, Crinums generally want full sun; they aren't shade candidates,
at least not here.
