You can pinch E. 'Gateway' back before it blooms. I think it would work on all the eupatoriums. I have a tall, white one (maybe 6 feet) that I pinch out several times--early spring--mid summer--only to control it's height. It blooms a little later and the flowers are smaller so they don't flop over like others might. E. rugosum 'Chocolate' does well in either full sun or part shade. I find that some shade in the heat of the day keeps the edges of the leaves from scorching. Ginny (zone 6 in PA)
