About mid-summer a lot of the leaves developed what I'm guessing was some
sort of leaf-miner damage--meandering trails of lighter green within the
leaf margins. I followed my usual practice of ignoring it in the hopes it
would go away, and later growth was uneffected. But I'm left wondering--is
this a common problem with this plant, or an unusual occurence?

This is common to a lot of the plants in this genus, I notice it most in
light shade.

The three plants that I have that appear to be most effected my leaf miners
are:

Aquilegia
Eupatorium
Petasites

They are easy to control if one needs to do it.
On larger plants I just remove the leaves as I notice the signs of infection.
(except on the Petasites)
