Kalmia and Rhodies are from the same family. They're more akin to the
smaller leaf rhodies. Kalmia should be planted and treated in the same
manner. I'd protect them the first winter from the elements, but after
that...they are on there own.
I have a small dwarf collection of kalmia that do very well here in zone 5.
