Bobbi,
I grow both. I would not consider Elymus a shade lover at all - it
wants sun. It is quite aggressive, but I just pull out runners or
dig in my spade to cut them off when they start to get too out of
bounds. I enjoy this plant no end and would not want to be without
it, even if it needs curbing.
Luzula is a very nice, low key, mounding grass with a fairly wide
blade that is sort of - well, hairy isn't the right word, but the
edges of the blades have loose threads....well, that's not a good
description, but best I can come up with right now:-) Personally, I
am not all that fond of the flowers - but some people say they are
neat. This is a well-behaved low mounding grass.
If you are looking for shade tolerant grasses, you might want to
consider Milium effusum 'Aureum'. Lovely yellow spring color, fading
a bit toward chartreuse as the season moves on; slow clumper. Will
seed, but seeds true and right around the parent plants; easy to
remove if you want.
