I've never had them take a plant out of the ground, either - don't
really think they're capable of it, being so small. But, I've had
them push up enough on a top-heavy plant so it falls over and out of
the ground...what's left of it. When they ate my violet the other
day, all the stems and foliage were lying in a circle around the hole
they left from eating the roots:-( They really chomped on that one!
I've known chipmunks to dig up a newly planted something, just for
the heck of it. I have read that they are so territorial that
something new gets on their nerves, so they "investigate" it. Never
had raccoons dig up any plants. Skunks will dig holes looking for
grubs and earthworms, and, if a plant is in the way, it will come
out, but they don't dig plants on purpose. Blasted squirrels will
also dig things up when they're either searching for buried nuts or
burying them; they have no interest in plants as such. Wild turkeys
can dig an amazing trench, including plants, if the plant has edible
roots or tubers...whatta mess they make!
