[SG] New to List

Hi! My name is Danyele and I have greatly enjoyed reading the voluminous
information on this list in the short time I have subscribed. By way of
introduction, I moved into a home a few months ago south of Boston, MA (Zone
6) where I inherited a yard that was once beautifully landscaped but now
overgrown with neglect. Apparently, a school teacher lived here with her
elderly mother, and she had great taste in shrubs and plants. She sold the
home 18 years ago and the owners kind of let it all go. We have about 3/4 of
an acre, more in back (eastern) than in front of the house. The backyard is
mostly woods, with old growth (about a dozen 80-100' White Pine), medium
growth (maple and oak, crab apple) and new growth. Close to the house we have
several very old and beautiful holly, rhododendron, and forsythia. We have a
cypress and a huge smokebush that is really a tree, and in the front yard we
also have spreading beech that creates LOTS of shade. Oh, let's not forget
the raspberry bushes that are in the back. I cleared out the forsythia in
that area so we can get in to pick them better next year. Most of the house
is good for partial shade, with many full sun areas, although under the beech
there is mostly shade. I have a hosta that is variegated but now fragrant.
In planting new things, we go for color and fragrance. I never knew there
were so many hostas until I joined this list. I planted some phlox under the
beech and it is doing great! I garden as organically as possible but not
strictly.

Well, this is getting long so I will end by saying that my goals for the yard
are to clear the back a bit so we have more grass. I think I'll compost the
back yard, which is mostly weeds and not grass, and then plant grass. Then
I'll put in some perennial beds. I must confess to starting a couple already,
one is lilies and yarrow, but without much of a plan. Just had to have
something in for our first summer here. Then I hope to build up the front
beds with shrubs that will provide both privacy and a softening of the
appearance of the house. We are putting in a sour cherry tree we picked up in
New Hampshire this weekend when the basketball hoop gets removed. Very
exciting! I am in the process of pricing bulbs both by mail order and nearby.

My household consists of my friend and lover, Colin, two guinea pigs, Mustang
and Sally, a bunny - Daphne - and a cat named Boo-Radley. We look forward to
learning more about how to make our house a home.

Sincerely, Danyele
