I second Clyde's recommendation of the Palm Branch Sedge, Carex
muskingumensis, a very fine and underutilized sedge, hardy to at least
Z4. Native to the Great Lakes region, it grows 2-3' for me in full sun
and not particularly moist soil. It will also do nicely in a dappled
light situation with more moisture, but will flop if grown in too much
shade. Lastly, it will grow in shallow water (3-4") deep, when young,
deeper as it matures.
The distinctive yellow-green foliage, resembling palm fronds (therefore
the common name) is very tropical and I love it combined with Blue Oat
Grass.
This wonderful and versatile sedge should really be grown more.
