I have found that the carexes do very well in actually quite dry conditions.
As far as suggestions, I THINK I grow most of them that are hardy in Z5.
I can think of only 2 that are somewhat "vertical." My favorite is C.
muskingumensis.
C. flagellifera is not hardy for me.
