Hello listees,
Winterizing my garden? I'm still planting and creating a new perennial
garden!
Over the weekend I built a 4-inch deep box to hold a 10x6-foot bed under a
maple tree in the back yard. This will be a garden of miniature perennials
including fern, hosta and other shade-lovers. A corner gets sunlight most of
the day, so this spot will be devoted to a few varieties of hen and chicks
(sempervivums).
It began raining Sunday; the weatherperson forecasts rain for 5 days, so
I've had to delay planting until this weekend. When it's completed, then
I'll start thinking about winterizing the garden.
It will be a simple task, which I require because of arthritis. I don't do
much at all except remove dead or diseased stalks and leaves. Plants that
are a bit cold-sensitive get some protection from a covering of grass
clippings. Small shrubs that rabbits enjoy will get protection from wire
fences. I don't spend a lot of time babying plants. They survive or I don't
grow them. Rarely do I lose anything. As my wife Pat says, "He has terrible
luck with plants; none of them die."
