Winterizing my garden? I'm still planting and creating a new perennial

I am in the same camp as John. I am redoing several beds for hostas and other
shade plants.
Our first frost date in Indianapolis is October 10 or thereabouts. But we dont
have a hard freeze here until December.(Usually.)
I find the Fall the best time to work in the garden---to create new beds and
such. Spring is often hectic around here.

As far as winterizing, I do keep a large stock of shredded oak leaves to
spread over the beds after the first hard freeze. I do not remove leaves that
fall into the beds.
I do periodically throughout the winter check to see if any plants that I have
planted in the fall have heaved.
Also,if you have a wren population on your property, do feed them in the
autumn and winter so they'll stay around and eat the slugs come spring.
