History and Coldframes

Lynn, what are Historic Irises (species, description, etc.)? Where can
they be purchased?

Nancy, in the past I used coldframes to establish plants that aren't
supposed to be hardy in my zone. I was surprised to discover how many are
hardy with no assistance if you help them through the first few years.
Coldframes are also perfect for getting an early start planting seeds. I
never get decent root development starting my seeds indoors late winter; it
isn't until they are outside in the ground that the healthy, thick roots
grow. So if I plant them in the ground to begin with, they seem to grow
sturdier and flower earlier, with just the slightest setback when they are
transplanted.
