My only experience so far is with the ordinary surprise lily, and it is
not a true shade GARDEN. Years ago when we were given some bulbs and
didn't know any better, we stuck them into a patch of euonymus under a
maple tree. They get full shade and no supplemental watering. In fact, the
maple tree blocks out most rainfall as well. Under these conditions they
do survive and bloom after a fashion. In a real shade garden with some
decent care, I'm sure they'd perform quite well.
