Jim Waddick has said that Lycoris in China are woodland species, hence the
winter or spring foliage which disappears in summer.
So here is a genus with potential for the shade garden which I suspect very
few gardeners have used this way. Waddick privately imports bulbs from
China each year, and for two seasons here I have been growing bulbs from
him of Lycoris chinensis (yellow), L. longituba (near white), and L.
sprengeri (rose with blue flashing) -- but I have them planted in full sun!
Each has bloomed, but so far the blooms are sparse, with ony a few of the
bulbs sending up a scape. I hope that as time passes and the bulbs become
established, they will bloom more regularly.
Has anyone tried any Lycoris in a shade garden?
