Re: Syntax for cultivar designations

The Hemerocallis Society religiously uses all caps in any reference to
cultivar names and in the registry.

I think that it is a good idea, caps for registered cultivars and
upper/lower case for unregistered.

As far as species designation, those taxonimists that keep changing their
minds, it is very exasperating experience when you as a good nursery person
are trying to keep things straight and consistent. As mentioned, they have
found better techniques to accurately identify species now, so I guess it is
all in the name of better science.

My own taxonomy training is probably out of date, but I seem to recall that
the accepted practice for hybrids of mixed and interspecies parentage was to
just put the X before the cultivar name. I. X 'KING OF KINGS', that is, if
the exact species parents are mixed or unknown. We still know it as a
Siberian type because the species are so closely related? X is usually
referred more to the wide species crosses. The more cultivated and
hybridized the plant becomes, the more complicated it is to know what to
specify for species. Seems to me they need something like another qualifier
there to distinguish things.

The further breakdown into sub-genera, section, sub-section, group or series
is not recognized in international nomenclature, or at least it was not
before. It is used by Iris specialists as an attempt to further classify the
genus Iris. I don't really like splitting, unless it is important to do so
for your hybridizing purposes that you must know if there may be any other
plants that could be split and then regrouped, distant relatives, etc. Just
makes things more confusing.
