Slugs

Slugs are busily munching my seedlings. Lost quite a few, lets hope
they come up again from the roots - though I doubt it. Now I put a
kiddo's small bucket over each one at night, likewise hostas just
showing through. Think I'll have to start buying tinned soup.
I did have a recipe for alum to stop slugs eating away. Have lost the
recipe, anyone else have it?
Third ? Does anyone grow MAGENTA? Slugs got every single seedling.
