We find siberians much easier than JI. First, they rarely NEED to be
divided, they continue to bloom beautifully for many years, though some
cultivars will hollow out in the center after a while. The only reason to
divide them is to share with friends. If you do wait a long time to divide
you will find the center of the clump very woody and not usable, but the
outer fans will be quite good.
Another feature of siberians that is different from JI is their need for
fertilizer ( or the lack of it). JI grow best with lots of regular
fertilizing, whereas we fertilize our siberians only once a year in the
spring, and if we miss a year they are totally forgiving. We give both JI
and SIB a nice thick mulch.
Siberians do not need as much water as JI to bloom well and are able to
tolerate a wider range of pH.
Welcome to siberian growing. Jan Sacks, Zone 5, where we are in the sugs,
drizzle with no near prospect of sun.
