Re: OTP - Iris ruthenica


I have divided I. ruthenica at two different times - early spring when the 
foliage is about 1 1/2 to 2 inches tall and in the fall.  I think the spring 
division is better and have had very few losses, though the fall division was 
OK.  When I divide mine I dig up 1/2 or 1/4 of the clump and take it down to 
single fan clusters, but I leave the rest in the ground, to insure that some 
of it lives.  

In the trade there has been  some confusion of I. ruthenica with I. rossii.   
I. rossii is very difficult to transplant and can not survive without its 
root tips.   As a result rossii is very rare in cultivation.  Perhaps your 
writer was confusing the two.
