first photos

Hi Friends,
One of my neighbors so kindly lent me a digital camera; but it took a
while to get the right programs to compress the files enough for posting.
It's a great way to put these onto the robin.
Things have been in bloom for nearly a month now, and many more crosses
still to open. I've got about 2200 99s jammed together 8" apart, 5 rows in
a 5' wide bed. In the photo you can see about half the field. This week at
last I've gotten excited over some of the flowers opening up. In any event
the vigor is far beyond what I've ever seen here - must be the field other
neighbors lent me. Most of the flowers approach 3', and I've got a few at
44". And I've never really had much variety in color before. It's pointless
to cut the grassy weeds until near the deadline for fire inspection at the
end of May, so just excuse their presence.
I think the one flower included here kind of unusual. The standards are
reddish; the falls are purplish on the right side (as we view them), but
the left 1/3 or 1/4 is reddish. I'm sure this comes from some bleeding
while the flower opens, the part that is pressed tighter together develops
the purple cast. Still, it is consistent from flower to flower.

I hope to get a few more photos posted before I have to send my computer
in tomorrow - the warrenty expires next week, and I don't have the photo
programs on my ancient 486 W3.1 machine.
