I owe all of you a big apology for transmitting the happy99 worm virus.
I had no idea that it was hanging around in my computer. Many thanks to
the people who quickly notified me of the problem so that I could take
care of it.
Now, what I had intended to send was a comment on hybridizing! After
having heard Tony Huber at the JI Symposium, I am convinced that more
work should be done on inter species crosses.
Generally speaking, Siberians fare better in colder climates. I.
tridentata is a wonderful southeastern native in the tripetalate series
(along with I. setosa). It has been largely overlooked, but it is an
excellent garden plant. I don't know that a cross is actually possible,
but I would postulate that if such a cross did occur, a nice compact,
well-behaved Siberian type garden iris for the South could be developed.
Thanks again.
